2023 Jinju Gateway Area Urban Sculpture and Plaza Design Competition, Grand Prize
진주는 영남권 내 중요한 역사적 의미를 지닌 특색 있는 도시로서 진주시의 지리 및 문화적 자원들은 유구한 역사들을 내포하고 있다. 이에 진주시에 분포하는 다양한 역사적 유산들의 공통 가치인 진주의 충절 정신에 주목하였다. 이 충절의 정신은 이를 실천한 인물로서, 정신이 행해진 장소로서, 정신을 계승하는 이벤트로서, 정신을 대표하는 상징물들로서 진주시에 누적되고 중첩되어왔다. 이에 대상지에 진주 고유의 충절의 정신에 대한 상기와 계승, 그리고 이를 유산으로 물려받은 현대의 진주시의 이미지를 담고자 하였다. 진주시의 관문 역할을 담당할 수 있는 부지의 지리적 특성에 착안하여 ‘새로운 진주의 문’은 시민들에게는 고향의 문화와 역사를 느끼며 휴식할 수 있는 시민친화적인 체험의 문으로서 기능하며 외부인들에게는 진주의 가치를 담은 상징의 문으로서 도시를 소개하는 역할을 담당한다. 이에 광장 대지 레벨의 조정으로 전체 공간을 점진적으로 하강시켜 진주시 다채로운 공간의 연출 및 주변 차도로부터의 시선 및 소음이 차단된 보행친화적 광장을 목표로 하였다. 또한 광장의 중심에 설치되는 진주문은 패브릭의 직조 구조를 차용하여 직물 고유의 색감과 물성을 통해 진주의 ‘충절과 의’의 정신을 재해석하였으며, 수공간의 광장 부지는 수경(水經)효과를 통해 산화한 진주 의인들의 충과 의의 정신을 기리는 명상의 공간을 의도하였다.
Jinju is a distinctive city with significant historical meaning in the Yeongnam region, and its geographical and cultural resources hold a long-standing history. The various historical heritage sites distributed throughout Jinju share a common value: the spirit of loyalty and integrity (Chungjeol) of Jinju. This spirit has been accumulated and layered across the city in the form of figures who exemplified it, locations where this spirit was upheld, events that carry forward its legacy, and symbols representing this spirit. This project aims to convey and carry forward the unique spirit of loyalty and integrity of Jinju, as well as to capture the contemporary image of Jinju City, which has inherited this legacy.
Focusing on a site that can serve as a gateway to Jinju, the concept of a "New Gate of Jinju" is designed to function as an experiential space. For citizens, it provides a citizen-friendly gateway where they can feel the culture and history of their hometown and find rest. For visitors, it serves as a symbolic portal introducing them to the values of Jinju. Through the gradual leveling of the plaza site, the design aims to create a pedestrian-friendly space that gradually descends to form a vibrant plaza, blocking views and noise from surrounding roads. The central feature of this plaza, the "Jinju Gate," incorporates woven fabric structures to reinterpret the spirit of "loyalty and integrity" through the colors and materiality unique to textiles. The plaza’s water area is designed as a meditative space, invoking a water-mirroring effect to commemorate the spirit of loyalty and integrity of Jinju’s historical figures.
